September rearranges the whole house. The kids go back to school, the duty schedule tightens up, and suddenly the dog who had company all summer is alone in a quiet living room for six hours. Pets notice that shift, and they tend to tell you about it — pacing, counter-surfing, inhaling dinner in nine seconds, or yowling at 5 a.m.
Pet enrichment is one of the categories climbing fastest on Amazon right now, and unlike a lot of trending pet gear, the reason is pretty grounded: sniffing, foraging, and licking are things animals are built to do, and letting them do it tires out the brain in a way another lap around the block doesn't. Here are six that come up again and again — plus an honest caveat up front. None of this replaces a walk, actual training time, or a vet visit. If your pet's behavior changed suddenly, start with the vet, not the cart.
Snuffle mat for dogs — A fleece mat with dozens of folds you hide kibble in, turning a thirty-second meal into fifteen or twenty minutes of nose work. It is probably the highest-value thing on this list per dollar, and most dogs figure it out within a week. Look for one that's machine washable, and size up if you have a big-muzzled dog — the standard mats get shredded by sheer force.
Lick mat for dogs — A textured silicone mat you spread something soft across and let your pet work at slowly. Many vet clinics now welcome an owner-brought lick mat as part of Fear Free handling, and it's the standard trick for getting through nail trims and bath time without a wrestling match. Freeze it loaded and it lasts considerably longer.
Slow feeder dog bowl — Ridged bowls that make a fast eater work around the maze instead of gulping. If you have a dog who finishes dinner before you've put the scoop away, this is the cheapest fix there is. Check that the base actually grips — a strong dog will shove a lightweight bowl across the kitchen and defeat the whole point.
Dog puzzle toy — Sliding and flip-lid puzzles where your dog has to move pieces to uncover treats. They come in difficulty levels, so start easy; a puzzle that's too hard just gets abandoned or chewed. Worth noting these are supervised toys, not something to leave down all day.
Freeze-dried single-ingredient treats — One ingredient, freeze-dried, no filler list to decode. They're light, they don't need refrigerating, and they break into small pieces — which makes them useful for training and easy to throw in a bag for a road trip or a PCS drive. Check the label rather than the front of the bag.
Cat wall shelves — Wall-mounted perches and steps that give a cat vertical territory when the floor plan doesn't have any to spare. That's the real argument for them in base housing and small rentals: you're adding square footage your lease doesn't charge you for. Mount into studs, and if you rent, check your housing rules on wall anchors before you drill.
The honest version
You don't need all six. Pick the one that matches the actual problem — snuffle mat or puzzle for the bored dog, slow feeder for the gulper, lick mat for the pet who hates grooming — and see whether it changes anything over two weeks. Enrichment works best as a small daily habit, not a shelf of gear.
And if a move is on the horizon, the routine matters more than the equipment. Our PCS With Pets guide covers the part that no gadget solves.
